Ian Bonder

Ian Bonder

Ian Bonder is a second-year PhD student at Concordia University – St. Paul., in St. Paul, MN. He is an Instructor in the Department of Kinesiology & Exercise Science at the College of Saint Mary and Director of Strength & Conditioning at Warren Academy in Omaha, NE. Ian is also the Nebraska State Director for the National Strength and Conditioning Association. His main research interests include: micro-dosed programming application, time-efficient and time-saving training methods, and tactical strength and conditioning.

Presentation Title: No time to train? No problem! Training the time-pressed population

Presentation Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate the distinct similarities and differences of several time-saving and time-efficient training methods;
  2. Examine the practical application of training methods provided in several unique populations;
  3. Exploration of micro-dosed programming strategy

Kris Cleveland

Dr. Kris Cleveland

Dr. Kris Cleveland is an associate professor in Exercise Science at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). She is also the director of the Pro Bono Physical Therapy clinic at SMSU. She was the program director until 2024. She developed the Wellness and Human Performance Center, and was instrumental in starting the Community Fitness program at SMSU, where Exercise Science students work as student trainers as part of their academic coursework. She is a Doctor of Physical Therapy who earned her BS degree at UW-LaCrosse, and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. Specialty areas Dr. Cleveland enjoys working in include Exercise Prescription for all ages, Functional Movement Systems (FMS certified), Y-Balance certified, NSCA CSCS certified, Certified Wellness Coach (CWC) Group fitness instructor: functional strength training, yoga/mobility. Physical Therapy: students with disabilities, Women’s health, vestibular disorders, orthopedics and sports medicine, Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) certified, LVST certified (treatment of Parkinson’s). Courses Dr. Cleveland teaches include Intro to Exercise Science, Fitness Assessment, Exercise Prescription, Principles of Training and Conditioning, Corporate and Community Wellness and Health Promotion, Athletic Enhancement Human Performance and Exercise Leadership, and Applied Learning in Physical Therapy/Rehab Services. Dr. Cleveland’s research interests are in student self-efficacy, exercise attitudes and well-being, physical activity in college students, and physical activity in working adults.

Presentation Title: Incorporating Experiential Learning into your Exercise Science program – bringing together University and community to benefit knowledge regarding physical activity and exercise in an employee/community fitness program on campus

Presentation Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn evidence-based practices in Exercise Science utilizing service learning/experiential learning.
  2. Participants will learn how client participation in a University/community partnership fitness program benefits students and clients.
  3. Participants will be given practical ways to incorporate these ideas into their academic courses.

Tiegen Lindner

Tiegen Lindner

My name is Tiegen Lindner, born and raised in Sioux Falls, SD. I received my undergraduate degree from Augustana University where I studied Exercise Science, Psychology, and Biology. I went on to receive my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the University of South Dakota. I now work as a Physical Therapist at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, specializing in Orthopedics, Sports Medicine, and Functional Dry Needling. I am a strong advocate for the “Movement is Medicine” initiative and I strongly encourage the patients who I treat to be as active as possible.

Presentation Title: The Key Ingredients to a Happy and Healthy Lumbar Spine: The Importance of Movement Across the Lifespan

Presentation Objectives:

  1. By the conclusion of this presentation, participants will successfully be able to understand the general anatomy and physiology of the lumbar spine.
  2. By the conclusion of this presentation, participants will successfully be able to select appropriate, active treatment options to decrease pain and improve function regarding the lumbar spine.

Donald Dengel and Sarah Greising

Donald Dengel & Sarah Greising

Dr. Dengel is currently a Professor and holds the Henry L. Taylor-Arthur S. Leon Professorship in Exercise Science and Health Enhancement at the University of Minnesota in the School of Kinesiology. His current research interests and long-term scientific goals center around the determination of body composition in athletes and how it affects performance as well as the effect of various diseases on bone and muscle.

Dr. Greising is currently an Associate Professor and holds the Henry L. Taylor-Arthur S. Leon Professorship in Exercise Science and Health Enhancement at the University of Minnesota in the School of Kinesiology. Her current research interests and long-term scientific goals revolve around understanding the limits of plasticity and regeneration of musculoskeletal system.

Presentation Title: Relationship of muscle to bone from animals to humans

Presentation Objectives:

  1. To expand one’s knowledge base in the understanding of the relationship of muscle and bone in the intact human being.
  2. To expand one’s knowledge of the basic mechanisms in the functional relationship between muscle and bone.
  3. The individuals will be able to list and explain factors affecting the relationship between muscle and bone.

Daniel Craighead

Daniel Craighead and Christopher Lundstrom

Dr. Daniel Craighead's research revolves around understanding why the cardiovascular system becomes dysfunctional with aging and disease, and testing potential therapies for improving cardiovascular function. He is particularly interested in novel forms of physical activity that may overcome barriers to exercise adherence, such as time-efficient forms of physical training. He also investigates ways to improve exercise performance in endurance athletes.

Dr. Lundstrom's research interests center on endurance exercise training and performance. Specifically, he is interested in running economy, aerobic capacity, metabolic substrate utilization, and heart rate variability.

Presentation Title: Adaptation to High-Volume Endurance Exercise, from Olympian to Mere Mortal

Presentation Objectives:

  1. Guideline-recommended levels of aerobic exercise reduce chronic disease risk and improve cardiorespiratory fitness.
  2. Athletes who successfully adapt to higher levels of aerobic exercise exhibit significantly improved performance in endurance exercise competitions.
  3. Athletes who perform a volume of aerobic exercise beyond an adaptable level may exhibit signs of worsening cardiovascular health.

Isabel Woelfel

Isabel Woelfel

Dr. Isabel Woelfel is a lecturer in the Kinesiology program at the University of Houston Clear Lake. She holds a B.S., M.A., and EdD in Kinesiology. Dr. Woelfel has worked in the fitness industry for the past fifteen years. She is also a certified ACE Health Coach and Personal Trainer, AFAA Group Fitness Instructor, and ACSM Exercise is Medicine Specialist. Dr. Woelfel’s passion for promoting exercise is reflected in her extensive experience as a group fitness instructor and personal trainer. Through her students and clients, she has seen how regular physical activity can positively change people’s lives. Dr. Woelfel’s doctoral dissertation analyzed the effects of a 15-week virtual educational Zumba fitness college course on motivation and enjoyment of physical activity. Using a framework that integrated concepts of intrinsic motivation and positive affect, her study aimed to implement and evaluate a virtual educational Zumba fitness college course as a potentially effective intervention to promote physical activity among college students. Dr. Woelfel’s goal is to inspire our college students to strive to be healthy and reach their potential. While making a positive difference in their lives, she aims to educate her students on health and fitness knowledge and empower them to be active and healthy.

Presentation Title: Inspire to Move: Evidence-Based Practices that Foster Positive Affect, Resilience, and Self-Efficacy

Presentation Objectives:  

  1. Examine the evidence related to positive affect, resilience, and self-efficacy and their relation to exercise adherence
  2. Evaluate the strategies that foster these psychological constructs with the goal of application to professional fitness practice
  3. Explore the importance of cultivating resilience to develop/formulate coping strategies that enhance mental health and well-being

Amanda Sullivan

Amanda Sullivan & Isabel Woelfel

Dr. Amanda Sullivan serves as the assistant department head, graduate coordinator, internship coordinator, and teaching associate professor of exercise science in the Department of Health, Human Performance, and Recreation at the University of Arkansas. In 15 years at the UofA, she has taught 20+ different courses across three program areas. In addition to teaching, she places approximately 150 students each year at over 30+ internship sites, supervises 25 departmental graduate assistants, and chairs or serves on multiple committees across campus and in the community. She has received multiple outstanding teaching and advising awards, and most recently was named a 2025 Leadership Institute Fellow by the American Kinesiology Association.


Presentation Title: The Three M's: Mental Health, Mindset, and Mindfulness

Presentation Objectives:

  1. Exercise science professionals will formulate strategies for incorporating mental health, mindset, and mindfulness practices to create more holistic exercise prescriptions. 
  2. Exercise science professionals will gain knowledge through purposeful learning experiences related to adversity, resilience, gratitude, etc. 
  3. Exercise science professionals will provide an inclusive environment that includes mental health, mindset, and mindfulness into professional practice.

Jeremy Frost

Jeremy Frost

Jeremy Frost, PhD, ACSM-EP, NSCA-CSCS, is an Associate Professor of Exercise Physiology, and Director of the Holbrook Exercise Physiology Center, at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He is a certified Exercise Physiologist from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM-EP) and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA). Jeremy served as the President of the Northland Chapter in 2021 and was a student at several universities in the region during his undergraduate and graduate education. He was formerly a Head Nordic Ski Coach at the college level, and enjoys Nordic skiing, biking and hiking as his primary means of achieving the physical activity recommendations.


Presentation Title: The effectiveness of using electric bicycles to meet the physical activity recommendations

Presentation Objectives:

  1. Understand the physiological differences between using electric bicycles and conventional bicycles.
  2. Understand the injury risk associated with electric bicycles, scooters, and skateboards.
  3. Explore suggestions for exercise programming to ensure electric-assisted devices are used effectively to improve and maintain fitness.
