The Texas Regional Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine will hold its 16th annual student bowl competition at its 2025 Annual Meeting. Student Bowl XVI is a Jeopardy-like competition that will test the participants’ knowledge of the exercise sciences.
Here is what you need to know:
1. Teams: Each team must consist of 3 undergraduate students who are still enrolled as undergraduates in the Spring, 2025 academic semester. As in years past, each question is asked of all teams, the team members will then be allowed to discuss possible answers, and then the team will provide an answer to their assigned referee.
2. Declaration of Intent to Compete: By 12/15/2024 schools wishing to compete in Student Bowl XVI must declare their intent to compete. At that time the schools will request to field either one or two* teams, and will provide the name of a faculty sponsor for their team(s). The faculty sponsor(s) serves as a point of contact for the school’s team(s). If a school is requesting to field two teams, a single faculty member may serve as sponsor for both teams, or two faculty sponsors may be listed. Declarations of intent to compete may be sent via e-mail to Christopher.Hearon@tamuk.edu by 12/15/2024. The faculty sponsor(s) will be notified shortly after this regarding how many teams their school will be allowed to field, and will be given further instructions.
*The Student Bowl XVI field is capped at 40 teams. Once every school declaring an intent to compete has been allotted one team, and if there is room under the cap, the remaining spots will be randomly assigned to schools requesting a second team until the cap is reached. This means that a second team is not guaranteed for any school.
NOTE: Sponsors will be required to attend a mandatory virtual meeting with referees the week of 2/10/2025.
3. Submission of Team/Referee Roster: By 1/24/2025 faculty sponsors must submit for each team competing:
1. Name/e-mail address of 3 undergraduate students competing.
2. Name/e-mail address of 1 faculty member to serve as a referee.*
Team/Referee roster for each team competing may be sent via e-mail to Christopher.Hearon@tamuk.edu by 1/24/2025.
*Each school must submit one referee per team competing. While team sponsors may also serve as referees (preferred), in the event that there is a single sponsor for two teams, that single sponsor can’t serve as the referee submission for both teams. Referee submissions do not necessarily have to be from the same school as the team submitting (i.e., it could be a professor from another school), as long as the name submitted has agreed to serve in that role for the school submitting. It is strongly preferred that referees be faculty members. If that is not possible, then it is preferred that they be doctoral students or, as a last resort, Master’s students. Undergraduate students should not serve as referees.
NOTE: Team members and referees must be pre-registered for the Annual Meeting (by 1/24/2025). Any team that does not have all team members/referees pre-registered for the Annual Meeting will not be allowed to compete in Student Bowl XVI and will be removed from the competition.
4. Referee Duties: Each referee will be assigned to a team not from his/her school. During the competition the referee will oversee scoring for their assigned team and serve as the liaison between their team and the stage judges should a question/answer challenge arise. Referees must have charged cell phone or laptop with internet access available to them during the competition.
NOTE: There will be a mandatory virtual meeting for all referees the week of 2/10/2025. At this time, the virtual scoring system will be set up and referees will be given access to and taught how to use the system. Additionally, the rules of the competition will be covered. Referees must have charged cell phone or laptop with internet access available to them during this meeting. In the event that a referee does not attend this mandatory meeting, he/she will be removed from the referee roster and the team that submitted his/her name as a referee will become ineligible to compete in Student Bowl XVI and will be removed from the competition.
5. Annual Meeting: All team members and referees are required to check in at the Student Bowl XVI venue (Brazos Ballroom) 30 min prior to the start of the event. Teams not checked in by this time be disqualified and not allowed to compete. See the Annual Meeting program for specific times.
