ACSM Seeks Call to Action Authors

Sept. 23, 2024

The ACSM Pronouncement Committee is looking for ACSM members in good standing to serve as authors for a recently approved Call to Action statement: “Intentional Examination of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) within Clinical Practice and Research.”

The ACSM Pronouncement Committee is dedicated to providing opportunities for all members and is seeking qualified experts, including representation from all genders, early to late career stage, American and international, PhDs, MDs and specialty certifications (e.g., DPT, ATC, RN, RD) to contribute to ACSM pronouncements.

ACSM members with:

  1. A published peer-reviewed scientific manuscript surrounding the SDoH within the last 12 months to ensure current awareness of the literature;

  1. Clinical outreach experience with health disparities within the last 12 months to ensure practical understanding of the current issue;

  1. Lived experiences that provide an understanding of the negative impact to health outcomes beyond the scientific literature to support the Call to Action; and

  1. Demonstrated passion to incorporate the SDoH in research, clinical practice and education

are encouraged to apply. Experience with manuscript publication and the peer review process in high impact journals is preferrable; contributions to the field or unique perspectives that would aid in the development of the manuscript are also desired. Experience and collaboration with ACSM committees and service to the college are desirable but not required. All applicants must be an active ACSM member in good standing and are expected to maintain an active membership status until publication.

A Call to Action statement provides a mechanism by which the college can comment quickly on topics where reader engagement is necessary. Call to Action statements reflect ACSM’s desire to highlight a current problem/situation and to develop an action-oriented set of recommendations or directives. The Call to Action paper is designed to provide:

  • A brief statement of the “problem” or “current situation” and the affected population and impact,

  • A short summary of the science,

  • Challenges or unknowns, and

  • A “call to action” to address the challenges/unknowns.

This statement is designed to be brief (not to exceed 1,000 words); present a statement of the problem, a brief summary of the science, and the challenges; and include a call to action. This paper will not be based on a systematic review of the literature or grading of evidence. Thus, it will be a combination of research evidence and expert opinion, relying heavily on the authors’ content expertise. The statement will be chaired by Tamerah Hunt, PhD, ATC, LAT, FACSM.

The statement will be published in one of ACSM’s official journals and will be made freely available to the public. The expectation is that the work on the paper will be completed within six to nine months, with all work being completed remotely (virtually). ACSM will provide support for the Writing Group to complete their work within a reasonable timeframe. This is a voluntary position, and monetary compensation will not be provided.

To apply, ACSM members must submit the following:

  1. A completed application form (Formstack),

  1. A cover letter (1″ margins, single spaced, two-page max, 1,000-word limit) outlining their rationale and qualifications to serve as part of this writing group, and

  1. A copy of their CV.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. EDT on Oct. 11, 2024
